Dr Sharan AthwalObstetrician and Gynaecologist, Southmead Hospital
Dr Sharan Athwal is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. She sees many women in her clinics for a variety of problems with menstruation, pregnancy, menopause which she knows can have a large impact on people’s lives. She also specialises in caring for women who suffer incontinence and prolapse after having a baby. She works from Southmead Hospital and is coming to Portishead on International Women’s Day to talk to the local community about common issues she knows about which affect women whilst they are having periods. Menstruation affects 50% of our population directly but 100% indirectly and it is not talked about as openly as it could be. Dr Athwal will open the floor for conversation in our community about periods and what they are, what problems can occur and why, and what girls and women can do about them.
As a mum herself, Sharna is passionate about empowering women particularly around their health. I feel that by understanding their own bodies and why common problems occur, they can break barriers and taboos enabling them to self manage when possible and seek the right help when required. Please come to her talk if you have periods or don’t have periods and want to know more. It’s a safe space to ask questions whether you are female or male.
